CYBER ATTACKS AND VICTIMS IN INDIA


In INDIA we are moving one step towards Digital India and cashless economy. But a big critical question mark is on security standard accepted to prevent cyber crime. According to data collected by KPMG, cybercrimes are being increased 3 times in last 5 years.

The Cybercrime Survey Reports 2015 released on Monday by KPMG in INDIA, is an attempt to analyses preparedness of organizations in INDIA to deal with cybercrime and incident by unearthing its modus operandi and its extent, besides highlighting preventive measures to deal with this menace.

FACTS OF CYBERCRIME SURVEY REPORTS 2015

1. In INDIA, in last 5 years, there is 3 times increment in cybercrimes, more than 32000 crime case have been filed and more than 20000 people have been arrested.

2. In last 3 years more than 96000 websites have been hacked.

3. According to report of KPMG, more than 72% of brand organizations have faced cyber-attack last year, and 63% of them suffered with a big financial loss.



4. If we take a look on the list of 44 countries, which have global risk factor of cyber-attack, INDIA is on 11th place. Most risky countries facing cybercrime are USA and China.

5. There is about 90 websites hacked on an average per day basis in INDIA.

6. The main target of hackers are Financial & Insurance sector (72%), Pharmaceutics (44%),   Oil and Gas Services (37%) IT & Telecom (23%), Government Organizations (19%) and Consumer Goods (10%).




In INDIA, in affairs of cybercrime, The Information Technology Act 2000 and IT Act (Modified) 2008 are applied. In some affairs, Indian Penal Code-IPC, Copyright Act 1957, The Companies Act, and even POTA (Prevention of Terrorism Ordinance) can be applied. There is no separate policies of Government of INDIA for Online fraud of shopping portals.

HOW TO HANDLE THE CHALLENGE AS GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE

1. According to Gartner (an American research and advisory firm), till 2020 there will be more than 60% Online business firms may be face to face with cyber-attack globally, because mostly business changing in digital environment. There will be an extremely increased pressure on IT firms to manage and maintain security standard.

2. As per an estimation, between 2017 to 2021, expenditure on cyber security will be 68 lacs crores globally.

HOW TO INVESTIGATE FOR HACK

1. If our account didn’t login even we are providing right credentials. This means that account has hacked, sometime we can get message regarding this.
2. If we got an alert that someone login to account from an unknown place.
3. We are getting some mysterious article, photos or posted videos, which we never share on our Social Media Accounts.
4. If there is a sudden flood of spam mails on mail ids or on Social Account, or we are following some strangers in large numbers.

WHAT TO DO IF I GOT HACKED

1. If account is open then change password first. Password should be strong.
2. If you are not able to change the password then request to support team. You will get a link for resetting password on your registered mail id.

PREVENTION METHODS

1. It will be better to use Chrome browser because it recognise phishing pages. If you are using Mozilla then upgrade it to version 51.0 or later, because Mozilla has recently upgraded some privacy features and security patches.
2. Don’t click on unwanted links and ignore such mails which instruct to open it on new tab.
3. Don’t reuse old passwords and change them frequently.

4. Do not used short characters in passwords. It should be mixed with capital and small letters, numeric and special characters.
